Royal Australian Mint charged over WHS Incident

Charges have been laid against the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra following an incident in the basement involving a three-tonne coin press almost falling on a worker.

The coin press was being moved with a forklift when the press became unbalanced and fell. A worker standing nearby was narrowly missed.

Investigations by regulator Comcare, the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions, found that the incident on 3 May 2019 breached work, health and safety laws.

Three charges have been filed alleging the Mint failed in its duties under the federal Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (WHS Act).

The matter is listed for mention in the ACT Magistrates Court on 24 June 2021.
